Make Music Day – 21st June 2020

Next week is a special weekend of celebration, so this week we will be busy getting ready!  Saturday and Sunday are Global Days of Unity, and Sunday (as well as being Father’s Day!) is World Make Music Day.  Across the world, people will be sharing musical performances.  The website www.makemusicday.org and the hashtag #MakeMusicDay on social media will give you more information.

Make Music Day is an open invitation for you to make and share music on 21st June. For 2020, people will be streaming their performances - https://makemusicday.co.uk/event/make-music-day-uk-live/ Do visit the website or YouTube link https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-KrTO8LbgFcuiuQ3KPmsnw on 21st and see/hear some live music.  There is a line-up of acts and times on the website - the event starts at 10am with musical stories for young children.

The official song for Make Music Day UK is Bring Me Sunshine.  We are working towards creating a performance video of this in school, which we will hopefully be able to post in time for the 21st.  If you want to sing and sign along to this song at home, then here is a video by Singing Hands:

This week, I would love for you to get involved in any music-making activity you like – sing and/or dance to your favourite songs, make your own instruments, or write your own piece of music about anything you like.

One special set of performances on Sunday will be played just on Flowerpots!  Flowerpot Music, written by award-winning composer Elliot Cole and directed by percussionist Peter Ferry, is a composition for an unlikely but beautiful percussion instrument – the flowerpot! 

Cole and Ferry have created a special online version of the composition for Make Music Day 2020.  Performances of Flowerpot Music by over two dozen groups from around the world will be live-streamed continuously for over 8 hours on June 21st.  If you are interested in joining in with this, visit http://www.makemusicday.org/national-projects/flowerpot-music/ Or, help yourself to an empty flowerpot or two from the garden and create your own flowerpot music!
